The Mid-State Amateur Radio ClubFranklin, Indiana"Serving Central Indiana Communities for Twenty-Four Years" Sunday, September 25, 2005BAND COMPETITION A SUCCESSMARC hams march to beat of different drummer
Posted 8:53 AM by Jack Thursday, September 22, 2005From Patrick Barkey, N9RVIn 2000 the Society of Midwest Contesters, a 400-strong contest club covering parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri and Indiana, came from "no where" to win the club competition in the ARRL November Sweepstakes contest. Those of us that were there will never forget the look of surprise on the faces of the Northern California Contest Club members when we were announced at Dayton in the following year as the winners. We went on to win two more SS's, in 2001 and 2002, but then a funny thing happened. We got complacent, the competition got better, and we've been on the short end of the stick now for two years running. I am writing you this email to enlist your support in trying to fix this situation. We have learned from experience that it takes all of us to win -- stations big, small, and everywhere in between. I have taken on the job of trying to get as many Indiana stations as possible on the air for this year's contest. Can you please help? All I am asking you to do right now is simply to mark two weekends on your calendar -- November 5-6 (CW) and November 19-20 (SSB). The contests run from 4 PM on Saturday until 10 PM Sunday night, with Saturday being the "prime time" to make contacts. I know all of you are not SMC members (this is not a problem) or do not reside in SMC "territory," which misses the SE corner of the state. But I think it will be a lot of fun to see so many Indiana stations making contacts in the contest. There's another little competition going on as well. I think that we have the best hams and the best contesters in Indiana (OK, I am prejudiced). I'd like to see Indiana contesters pile up more points for SMC than Illinois, Wisconsin, or any other part of the club. What do you think? I'll be back in touch with you in the coming weeks to see how your SS plans are coming along. If you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email. And I hope to hear you on the air in November! Posted 6:40 PM by Jack From the desk of Linda Harshbarger!!! Since there is only one person running for each officer position this year, an actual election is not needed. But a ballot was made anyway, for official purposes.
