THE WIND BEGAN TO TWITCHNearly three dozen amateur radio operators and Johnson county emergency services personal were on hand for the annual Skywarn training provided by the National Weather Service.
Chief NWS Meteorologist John Ogren conducted the two hour session covering spotter safety and severe weather elements.

Skywarn net report for February 16:There was a Skywarn weather net for Johnson County Thursday night, running for 48 minutes (9:12 to 10:00 PM). Net control: KB9SKI. 9 base and 3 mobile stations. Participants: KB9SKI, KC9ICJ, KC9EBL, N9LC, KC9FXR, K9DY, W9DEW, KC9EKR, KB9WIH, N9SIU, KB9RBB, KC9CCM. A quiet net; nothing reportable happened, and NWS didn't see anything in the Johnson County part of the storm line needing a special look. If they were all like this we wouldn't be needed, but...sometimes they really need us. Many thanks, folks, for serving.

Technician license class starts March 7The annual MARC ham radio license class will begin on Tuesday, March 7, at the Johnson County EOC (this is the same location as the monthly club meetings). Classes will run 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM for the next six to eight weeks, with extra time after 8:00 PM for those wanting to stick around for hands-on demonstrations of useful and interesting ham skills such as How to Solder, Simple Homemade Antennas, Morse Code demo, and practice license exams.
This class will be taught by Ernest Clark, KB9SKI, and by its end students should be able to pass the examination for the Technician license. Motivated students frequently pass the exam weeks earlier. Oops--almost forgot. Morse code is not required for a Technician license.
The class is FREE. The class textbook will be Now You're Talking, 5th Edition, published by the American Radio Relay League for $20, or available through the class at the instructor's discount of $15. To reserve a copy, or to ask any questions, contact the instructor at hamclass@midstatehams.org.
Club members--spread the news. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell anyone who has ever been curious about the forest of antennas about your house and vehicle, that the chance and the time are coming, starting March 7.

SKLong time MARC member Richard Hodson KI9T expired last weekend. Richard was an EXTRA class operator. He has been a familiar name and voice on the club repeater over the last 20 years. As a quadrapalegic he was confined to a wheelchair and operated from a customized radio station provided by the Mid-State ARC. Richard's kind words and mello tones will be missed. At age 60, KI9T is SK.

James Smith WV9W scores a Tech test at the January MARC Franklin test session. The VE will hold a special test session at the Columbus Hamfest March 25, 2006
