TOWER POWER

Two new Amateur Radio antennas now grace the top of the 140-foot White River Twp. Fire Department communications tower at Station #51.

A 4-bay Dipole sits on top for the 146.835 repeater while a side mounted duel band antenna waits for a UHF repeater and APRS Digipeter.

2008 Ham Class

Club PIO Linda Harshbarger has posted a flyer for the Mid-State Amateur Radio Club's 2008 technician class, which will be held at the White River Fire Department, located at Olive Branch Road and State Road 135, just south of Greenwood. The classes will be held on March 19th, March 26th, April 2nd, and April 9th. Classes are free, but students must provide their own textbooks, available at a variety of places.

CLUB BUILDS MULTIMETER PROJECT

In an effort to improve soldering skills and component understanding MARC members built their own multimeter. Brian KB9BVN and Marc KC9CCM offered technical advice to first time kit builders.

MARC HAMS HONORED BY HENDRICKS COUNTY

JR Osborne KB9HSE and Jack Parker W8ISH have been recognized for Devoted and Valuable Amateur Radio Service to Hendricks County. Jay Wright KK9L made the presentations on behalf of Hendricks County Commissioners. Both MARC hams have been involved with amateur radio activities outside of Johnson county over the past year.

REPEATER MOVE MAKES CONTACTS

The MARC repeater went on the air Friday November 2, 2007 from its new home on top of the White River Fire Department Tower at Station #51. That's near the intersection of SR135 & Olive Branch Road. At 940-feet mobile, base and HT coverage in Johnson County has been greatly improved. Current output is 7 watts.

Vernon Gill, N9QBO, SK

It is with great sadness that we have to relay the news of the passing of longtime Mid-State Amateur Radio Club treasurer and lifetime member Vernon Gill, N9QBO. Vernon passed away on Wednesday night.

Long known as "The Voice of Johnson County", Vern's steady inflection was once a fixture of our Sunday night nets. From his home in Franklin, he would broadcast Amateur News Weekly and Newsline as well as take check ins from as far away as Greensburg, Indiana. His voice could also be heard on Johnson County's other VHF repeater, the KN9E 145.11 MHz system, colloquially known as "The 511". He also filled in as net control for many of our special events. Jack took this photo of Vern at the Flatrock run a few years ago.

Vern also served as a longtime treasurer of the club, and played an active role in deciding club policy and direction through his involvement with the club's executive committee. This club wouldn't be here today without his effort and dedication.

Some of Vern's other interests included the railroad (he was an avid train historian and a retired railroad employee) and computer technology. On the ham bands, he was a fixture on packet (including APRS), VHF/UHF, and SSTV. He was also a routine attendee at the supper gathering every week.

His showing is tomorrow (2 November 2007) from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Vandivier-Tudor Chapel, 951 North Main Street, in Franklin. There is also a celebration of life service this Saturday at 10:30 AM at the same location. His obituary is featured in The Daily Journal and The Indianapolis Star.

Although Vern caught a train bound for a better location Wednesday, he left some pretty big shoes to fill back at the station. Have a safe journey, my friend. We'll miss you.

FINALLY! IT'S UP
NEW REPEATER ANTENNA PLACED ON WHITE RIVER TWP. FIRE DEPT. TOWER

After months of planning and waiting for the right weather our new club antenna was installed at the 140 foot level on the tower at White River Twp. Fire Station #4 . We are on the top. Phase One completed at 3:30PM October 29th.

Our first simplex contact was made with Dave K9DC who was at 116th street and Meridian near Carmel. Our output was 100mw.

Next phase is to move the repeater from Franklin to the fire station on Olive Branch Road near SR 135. . That should be completed by the end of October 2007. Stay tuned for more.

BANDING TOGETHER
MARC members tuned up their rigs and provided communications and parking assistance for the annual Greenwood Band Invitational Sept. 22nd. The eight hour event was held under perfect fall conditions.

NEW TEAM TAKES OFFICE
Following a close contest for club president Jack Parker W8ISH was selected to head up MARC. This is Jack's second time to handle the gavel. He served as the third MARC club president. Steve Carmean, K9DY accepted the treasurer job. Dave Daily, KB9LOT begins his fourth term as VP while Carol Osborne KC9CKF holds down the secretary positon one more time. Our thanks to JR Osborne KB9HSE and Brenda Haler-KC9EBL for their time and efforts over the past two years.
